DAMNIT!
THRASHER
EXCLUSIVE
INTERVIEW
by LoBoy
LoBoy: Why did you kill the sport?
D.D.M.: Somebody had to do it.
LoBoy: Well, what happened?
D.D.M.: The population of America
aborted the sport. In a deliberate attempt
to undermine not only Skateboarder
Magazine but also the entire skateboarding
industry and the ensuing punk rock
movement at the time. As a result, BMX
has flourished and skateboarding has
been left to be a very soulful if not the
most individual sport that has ever come
along in the history of Man. Anyone now
who endeavors in the activity of skate-
boarding...who's that chick anyway?
ON BOARD
D. DAVID MORIN
...Uhmm, can classify themselves, I
would say, as not only a free spirit but a
second generation pioneer.
FORMER EDITOR OF ACTION NOW MAGAZINE
D.D.M.: Can I talk to my lawyer first? The
answer to that is this, it was me, in the
past tense. I posed for that, I gotta say.
And the girl was a lot better looking than
how she photographed.
LoBoy: So are you saying BMX is middle
class?
D.D.M.: Sure.
LoBoy: What about Dave Dash?
D.D.M.: He's in middle to upper. We're all
in there somewhere.
LoBoy: There's a lot of talk in this sport
that you're just a guy in tight pants driving
around in a Porsche, posing.
D.D.M.: That's talk.
LoBoy: Do you skate?
D.D.M.: Sure I skate. Let's go skate.
LoBoy: Rollerskate?
D.D.M.: I rollerskate...with Dorothy Strat-
ton.
LoBoy: There's been some....she's dead.
D.D.M.: I know.... I was John Ritter in my
other life.
LoBoy: There's been some problems.
You know, there was the centerfold in the
magazine (Rollerskater), the white shorts,
the rollerskates, the Porsche, is that really
you? This is a serious question, people
want to know this.
Anonymous: Were those your legs?
D.D.M.: I had those legs shipped in from
New York for that shot. Special fish belly
white, shark bait white legs. They shipped
them in and it was shot in February. They
wanted me to look like I was from New
York for that shot.
LoBoy: What do you think the future for
skateboarding is?
D.D.M.: Well, back to your first question
though. People can think what they want.
There has got to be a scapegoat, I guess,
for the death of the sport. I've been
labeled it, I'll accept the role. It's a pretty
popular choice, I guess, to place the
blame on me.
LoBoy: So it would be accurate to quote
you as saying the sport is dead.
D.D.M.: No. I have never said that the
sport is dead. This is again an example of
me being the proverbial scapegoat.
People putting words in my mouth. I'm the

"No. I have never said that the sport is
dead. This is again an example of me
being the proverbial scapegoat. People
putting words in my mouth. I'm the one to
blame. I'm the one to be accused of. All
I've done is told things the way they were,
and I have never said that skateboarding's
dead."
"What crop? There is no new crop. I mean
do you think Ruff and Blender are going
to be skating six months from now?
Competitive skating, I don't think, will be a
thing of importance in the future."
"We had to diversity, we had to brancn
out. And then I get hate mail that the kids
want to assassinate me and that I'm this
or that. You know, pretty derogatory stuff."
