EASTERN FRONT
3rd Annual Pepsi Pro-Am
Sensation Basin Skatepark
Gainesville, Florida
November 29, 1980
Despite a small tumour in the
professional category. the Third
Annual Pepsi Team Challenge at
Sensation Basin turned out to be
quite a success. It probably
wouldn't have mattered who
tumed out, as amateur rider Monty
Nolder ripped too heavily for top
Pros like Mike McGil Mike Folmer
or Mark Lake to catch him. Second
place McGill collected the $100
prize money while Nolder retained
amateur status
Ag
A good strong contingency of
amateur riders entered showing a
strong competitive spirit Jeff
Newton brought his Zoric Skate
Team all the way from Dallas, Texas
who all put in fine individual efforts
As in past years, Sensation Basin
showcased a lot of up-and-coming
East Coast amateur talent and
everyone had fun. All in all a good
time.
Mike McGill was the top Pro at Sens Basin

INTERVIEW
CONFESSIONS with Shawn Peddie
Shawn in his own private backyard pool. Peddie Plant
On a recent journey eastward,
somewhere in Florida, we were
scheduled to stop in Tallahassee. It
turned out to be the hometown of
master vertman Shawn Peddie.
veteran Florida Pro whom I have
seen and read about in skate-
read
board magazines for some time.
My first impression took place at his
home where Mike Folmer, Chuck
Walstead and myself
and myself were in-
specting h his pool while waiting on
his return home. The beans were
then spilled on one of Shawn's
obsolete tapes which bore the
name Lynard Skynard Gold & Plati
num. The following confessions took
place while we were sitting on the
coping of Shawn's private back-
yard pool. The depth is below.
-8 Bowman
BB: How long have you been
skateboarding?
SP-Bout five years
BB
How long professionally?
SP. About three years.
88 Do
have a model?
your
SP. Yes, Shawn Peddie Pro design
30% by 10%
88 Who manufactures in?
SP. Bruce Walker and Boulder
Boards
BB: What about this pool here.

SP. My father and brother.
BB: Have you been to California?
SP. Yes, two years ago.

when you were there?
SPI skated the Big O, Lakewood

sors for skateboarding?

ment?
SPI use Rector pads and S10
shorts
88: How big is this pool?
SP: It's eleven and a half feet
deep and thirty by thirty feet wide.
88 What about the canyon
there?
SP.It's about seven feet wide
BB This is small coping huh?
SP. Yeah. I used to have brick
coping...WAY GNARLY. (laughter)
88
Way gnarly. Now you've got
this little skinny stuff. What about
your local friends who skate?
SP: They SUCK! (more laughter)
I'm just kiddin. Scott Hughston
and Jeff Hodges, they rip
88: Do they live around here?
SP. Yeah
BB: How's your contest record
have you won any money?
SP. At Kona, Jacksonville I won
sidy bucks and beat Mike Cox
68: Any others?
SP: Let's see... Gainesville I got
second place.
BB: How much money?
SP. Seventy bucks...and a trophy.
BB: So you haven't made much
over a hundred dollars yet for Pro
skating
SP. Well, the first contest I entered
I won eight hundred dollars in
BB: Oh, OK Where was that at?
SP Kona, US Open
88 Was that when a lot of pros
from California come out here?
SP: Yeah, I beat Tony Alva and
those guys
88
BB: Did you ever enter any ama-
teur contests or did you go right to
the pro ranks?
SP:The purse was for Two Thou
sand bucks and they just talked me
into entering pro and I went
BB: And you won the dough?
Vedh

occur from skating?
SP. Yes. About two months ago 1
had a pulled muscle. So I had to
walk on crutches for three days and
I was out of skating for about a
month. Now I'm getting back into
it
88 What part did you hurt?
SP. Kinda like a ligament, I just
didn't hurt it real bad. It was under-
neath and in back of my knee while
doing a frontside rock 'n roll
88 How do you see the future of
pro skateboarding in Florida?
SP. Well, now we've got a lot of
Pros and skateboarding is coming
back in so we oughta have a lot of
hot contests
88 Is there any chance that you
might
build your own skatepark
someday?
SPI hope so. If I can make
enough money I'm gonna try to
make one in Panama City or some-
where that it will go over big
Tallahassee just doesn't have the
ability to...
88 Doesn't have the ability to
what?
SP. Just doesn't have enough
skaters to support the sport.
in
88: How long have you lived here
Tallahassee?
SP. I've lived here for twelve years
and up in Jacksonville before that.
I was born in Jacksonville.
88: Tell me about the ramps
you've had
SPI used to have a wooden pool
that had over two hundred sheets
of plywood It looked just like a pool
It was more of an oval shape and it
had an over vertical half-pipe in-
side with tile and coping and it was
made c out of wood
BB: Sounds Bad. How about that
car over there in the garage?
SP. Well, I got a Mazda RX-7.I'm fix-
in to get it turbocharged and get
Pirelli fires put on
88: What do you have on it now?
SP Got a whale tail a frontspoiler
on a seven hundred dollar Jensen
stereo with a Sanyo
equilizer.
BB: Do you have a girlfriend or do
you just go for all the locals
SPI just go out and date. Go to
parties a lot. We have them every
Friday and Saturday night. Mostly
out at bars and places like that
88 Out away from town, yeah?
SPYeah
88 Ever been in any car races?
SPIve gotten in two. A guy by the
ва
of Teehee, a big fat guy at
name of
my school, wanted to race me and
I beat him by three car lengths
88 What ride does he have?
SP-Uh...a Cutlass, with HEADERS
BB Any low riders in these parts?
SP No...no low riders (Scot
Hughston speaks out) My Mom's
Who's skatin' good down here?
SP Mike Cox is ripping lately.
88 Who's that?
SP: Mike Cox is from Jacksonville.
He's sort of pro but he hasn't won
too many contests He's kinda stay-
-Pro. Like when he
ing Amateur-4
thinks he can win he enters Pro. If
not he stays Amateur
But he d
e doesn't accept the mo-

that stuff.
88 Rumor has it that you make up
a lot of your own maneuvers for the
vert. Any that you want to men-
Sion?
SPOK Lately I've thought of this
trick which is really a frontside flip. It's
the backwards of the Bigweera
fip.
68 Biguera?
SP. Elgw...Elge... Yeah. (laughter)
88 Doy
o you u mean you go up
backwards (fake) and do a back
flip then come out in a...
SP Frontside Invert
88 Oh yeah, that's rad. Explain
the Peddie Plant to me
SPA Peddie Plant is where you do
a frontside tail stall, then footplant
and jump into the air and put your
foot on while grabbing with your
opposite hand and land. Also I've
got another trick that's called a
fake three-sixty. It's where you do a
fake and grab the board as you go
up the wall and do an aerial three-
sixty. I can do a 360 hanger
up pogo off of that trick
BB-What is your music preference
these days?
